He is one of those people you can’t help but fall in love with immediately.
One of our Team for Life Members, David Wingard, a 62 year-old, Charleston, SC native, runs marathons and ultra- marathons throughout the U.S., and other continents, raising awareness and funds for Lazarex Cancer Foundation. David lost his wife 4 years ago to Melanoma and uses running and fundraising as his ways to fight back. He is a Marathon Maniac, as well as a member of other major running groups. David is also a recovered Alcoholic and has proudly been clean and sober since April 13, 1998.
He is an inspiration to runners over 60, to recovering and recovered Alcoholics, and to the entire cancer community. Honestly, I believe David is a true inspiration to everyone he comes into contact with. He is one of those people you can’t help but fall in love with immediately.
David only started running when he was 52 years old. Now, with close to 100 marathons under his belt (2500 miles & counting), David is just getting started. Since March 2012, David’s miles have had extra meaning, running in support of Lazarex Cancer Foundation.
When I think of the patients and how much they put into their fight, and the struggles they deal with every day just to survive, I knew I needed to do more.
“I decided that I would like to do something really big to help their cause. I have wanted to hike the Appalachian Trail for a long time so I thought that perhaps I could somehow do that and use it as a fundraising tool at the same time. But I didn’t think that was enough. When I think of the patients and how much they put into their fight, and the struggles they deal with every day just to survive, I knew I needed to do more. It was then that the runner in me decided that I should attempt to do this fast, real fast! That was when I got the idea to go all the way and go for the Guinness World Record. In the process I want to raise awareness of the fight against this dreaded disease in hope that one day we shall conquer cancer once and for all.“
On June 14th, 2014, David Wingard will set out to beat the current World Record for hiking the Appalachian Trail. In order to come in under the current 46 day record, Wingard will need to hike at least 48 miles per day for over 6 weeks.
“A marathon’s 26.2 miles or the Appalachian Trail’s roughly 2,200 miles is nothing compared to the journey a cancer patient will encounter,” says Wingard. “This trek is a way for me to give back, help others and bring awareness to what we can do as individuals to fight this disease that has touched so many of us.”
The Lazarex Cancer Foundation AT14 Campaign kicks off at the SF Marathon on June 16th, 2013.

Lazarex Cancer Foundation builds a bridge to hope, dignity and life for cancer patients and their families. We provide financial assistance to defray the costs associated with patient participation in FDA clinical trials. Additionally, we help patients navigate their clinical trial options and provide community education and outreach services. Our mission is to provide resources for cancer patients who’ve been told they have no other options, but who are not yet done with their journey in life and refuse to give up now.
Team for Life is a unique fundraising program that gives you the chance to directly support Lazarex Cancer Foundation by participating in any endurance event where Lazarex has an official team OR by creating your own fundraising event.
